Do the rich get all the breaks?

No one would argue that traffic in South Florida is a nightmare. But how willing are we to change our habits to make it better? Time -- and money -- will tell.
Local traffic experts are studying an idea that has worked in other states. It would charge a monthly toll for solo drivers for a decal that would allow them to drive on the restricted lane for carpoolers on I-95. To be honest, my immediate reaction was: Here we go again. People with money get all the breaks.
But read closely and you'll learn that benefits ripple down to regular commuters because paying cars would be moving off the regular lanes.
If they ever get I-95 working, maybe traffic experts will work on SR 836. That's a parking lot at almost any time of the day.

The problem with SR 836 is the series of overpasses (Miami's closest thing to hills) between NW 42 Avenue and the Palmetto (SR 826). Due to Miami drivers' unfamiliarity with hills, drivers either think that there is a cliff beyond the rise and decelerate out of caution and fear of the unseen, or they do not accelerate enough to maintain speed through the hills and are thus slowed down by the simple laws of physics. Add to that, the idiots that slow down as they drive by MIA, because they do not wish to miss a chance of witnessing a catastrophic accident at the airport and there you have your major causes of the SR 836 problems.

Beyond the Palmetto towards the FL Turnpike, the problem is simply overcrowding in the SW 8th St/ Coral Way Westchester area. Thank you, developers and co-operative and friendly Miami-Dade County Board of Commisioners, past and present (special thanks to Miriam Alonso).
