Reading, writing and safety
Years ago, when my daughter became the first one of my children to enter high school, I was mortified that the principal spent most of his orientation speech talking about safety. What about academics? I wondered. What about learning and critical thinking and college?
Obviously the guy knew what he was talking about. Shootings on campus -- college or otherwise -- are not rare anymore. This week we've had two in two days at local schools. What the hell is going on with our kids? Are they simply a reflection of the society at large?

I don't know if it's a reflection of society or just a sign of the times.
After Columbine, there have been several "copy cat" episodes.
There should be more control over firearms in this country -- it has become too easy for kids, or any nutcase to get a hold of weapons.
The problem is not our kids -- I am sure that there were unbalanced teens in past generations also - it's just that they were unarmed.
So now, yesterday, there is a RIOT at Edison High School. I don't know how ANY educator would take a job in that school.
As the story goes, one kid got in trouble for fighting an asst. principal and a school resource officer. The other kids decided to "RIOT" (this is an actual quote from one of the interviewed students). When the School Board police showed up to monitor this "riot" - they were welcomed with flying bottles.
The local media jumped at the chance to speculate and force their bias on the rest of us. These poor kids, were only "demonstrating" and the police attacked them. Really? No one is buying that story.
The parents of these kids are all upset because their little innocent children were abused by the police.
If you don't want to anger the cops -- don't throw bottles at their heads.
In any case, I also find it interesting how they jumped on this story when the story about an educator being held at gunpoint in a parking lot only got the briefest mention. The only reason there wasn't a death there was because the gun did not work.
Incredible. We need to protect ourselves and any decent person from the mob mentality and permissiveness that allows these things to occur.
The kids in Edison should be held at juvenile facilities. The educators at that school should be issued flack jackets and given hazardous duty pay.
The system needs to get control of these teens so that the other kids are able to learn.
