Teachers deserve better

What does it say about our society when we pay our teachers so poorly that they have to take second jobs to make ends meet? On the other side of the spectrum, we have athletes and entertainers pulling down hundreds of thousands of dollars for an appearance. Are their contributions any more important?

What does it say about our value system that we don't reward teachers for the important job the do? Does it mean that we do not value teaching as a profession or is it that we really don't value the welfare and future of our own children? Or both????

I watch the news and hear about low-life entertainers (pick one of many that are making the headlines now-a-days) and learn that they are worth millions!?! How does that happen? Then, I read in the Herald that our educators are forced to take second jobs in order to make ends meet. This is ridiculous!!

If we paid people by the worth of their endeavors -- Britney would be dirt-poor (and unable to buy all the substances that she abuses) and teachers would be making a comfortable living. In an ideal world....

A saying comes to mind - "If Ifs and Buts were candy and nuts it would be Christmas all year 'round."

Reality sometimes makes no sense!

Teachers are the most valuable persons in our community, but we don´t realise about the value of their teaching. Someone, someday said: "teachers don´t produce consume´s goods, they don´t produce money at once".Have you ever heard something so stupid?...
I think teachers are alway"scattering the seed, and waiting the harvest times"

The teacher is the most important job in any economy.

Teachers have to make the same amount as they would in the professional world, that to me is fair.

The Miami Herald article is not the only article this year talking about low teacher salary and taking a second job.

When I talk to my friends about who was the most influential person in our lives, not counting parents, without exception the name of a beloved teacher or coach comes up.

The people who guide and mentor our youth as they teach them the necessary knowledge and skills to make it in this world should be better rewarded.

After all the years of school and continuing education, the salaries should reflect the level of professionalism required for these positions.

They hold our future in their hands. God bless them!

I believe teachers deserve a 6 figure salary, I mean come on. Teaching is a lot of work. Teachers are basically baby-sitters, psychologists, motivational speakers, problem-solvers, "second" parents, tutors, etc. etc. all wrapped into one. I say give up the 2nd job and start a part-time or seasonal biz. Visit my blog and I can teach you how.

The teaching profession is one of the most under paid and under appreciated profession in today's world. These men and women are the foundation for our youth who in turn will be the leaders of tomorrow. It is shameful what these people earn after being in college for four years !!! This is a travesty, one that unless it is rectified in the very near future will no doubt cause a massive exodus of teachers.
It is time our government take a action on the very important matter

IN Chile a teacher earns 1000 dollars per month after 30 years of teaching.
What about in State?

In addition to low salaries, Miami-Dade teachers must contend with the stong-arm tactics superintendent Crew and the board use to take back the salary increases some of us received last year.
For example, teachers rejected a UTD/School board agreement to have teachers pay prohibitive health insurance premiums, which would have canceled our so-called raises, so they threaten us with lay-offs.
Yet, not only did Crew receive a $40,000 bonus after the number of F schools went up to 39, but he was also named Superintendent of the Year by the AASA.
Are we living in bizarro world?
