They learn this behavior at home

I can't understand how the young men who are accused of beating up a black FIU student -- some of them my sons' ages -- could behave so inhumanely and horribly. People aren't born this way. They learn this hate at home or among their peers.

It really doesn't matter WHERE they learned that kind of behavior -- it is still their responsibility. They are the ones responsible for their actions. That's the bottom line.

What amazed me is how easily people resort to violence. This case happened to be Hispanic boys going against a black kid. There are many more incidents reported every day - many of them are black on black (shootings and drive bys) and violent roberies where race did not play a part.

We should condemn ALL crime. Not just "hate" crimes. ALL crimes are HATEful. The laws should go after everyone who hurts anyone, no matter what the racial background of the perps or the victims.

A crime is a crime. Those boys are thugs and should be treated as such.

That's my opinion.

its sad when you have hispanic kids who come here - probably illegally - and have hate built inside. what they don't realize is that if they lived hours up north - they would have the same kind of hatred. south florida is just a small part of the u-s. hispanic community is not as welcome. very sad.

I hope a Jena type march can be had for these young men. This is just a schoolfight and as Michael Baidsen proclaims, you shouldn't arrest for a schoolfight.

They learned this behavior by not having any empathy for others. Antisocial personalities are the worst, most violent, and unpredictable of all. Whether hispanic or otherwise - one doesn't "learn" to drown someone and use the "N" word at home (hopefully). More likely, they are full of rage and exist in a small minded society that has never taught them the consequences of acting like such demons without souls. On the other hand, maybe they're innocent (until proven guilty). That last comment is a stretch in modern society and probably too much to ask, so I'll expect Miamians to react they way they normally do, which is along racial and ethnic lines and hurling epithets at each other, further dividing the communities. Keep in mind this kind of evil behavior is not indicative of any particular group of people. Hatred spoils all things, of all colors. This time, it was just some angry kids who confuse flexing muscles with bravery, or some other tortured rationalization. How pathetic. It doesn't help that everyhwhere you look in Miami this kind of "bravado" is encouraged by dumb rappers and a social "elite" on the beach scene that equates toughness with intelligence.

Given that these young adults are between the ages of 18 - 21...there parents are equally responsible. Even though, legal age is 18. In my opinion, these kids whether born & raised in the US or came thru illegally...parents are still responsible. Children are an example of what they see at home. Parents & Children need to be held equally responsible.

Today's parents are too irresonpsible to give their children an adquate loving home for various reasons. Parents need to also be held accountable for the irresponsible decision-making they have made.

They learn this behavior on television. Drugs and glue sniffing also help. C'mon folks, we have a president who does a pious "right to life" pose while hundreds of thousands of Iraqi innocents are dead-meat collateral damage bomb splatter.
C'mon, flick on the tube. You can see dozens of scripted violent capital crimes perpetrated for peoples freaking entertainment every night.
You are what you eat. We have become the Empire in Decline.

I recall several weeks ago reading about some other young adult about 22 yrs old accused of murder, I believe, who also belong to these ridiculous society-disease of gangs. Interesting thing is that this young man's father is a doctor. Hmmm, I wonder. Hopefully, everyone gets my point that parents need to be equally accountable & responsible.

I have to agree with Eden, Miami though an attractive place is filled with some very unattractive people with a lot of attitude and unfriendly demeanors. They might be physcially attractive, but honestly I have found the Cubans in S. Florida or the Miami area to be biased, racist and totally unfamiliar with the concept of customer service. I don't think it's in their vocabulary. I don't think that is debateable. It is an atmosphere of entitlement and priviledge that they display and give off.

I find that attitude very repulsive considering the pampered way the US government has treated that community, pampered in ways that native born Americans in the same area could never expect. I can't say the same thing about other Hispanics or outside of the Miami area.

Border security is long overdue in Miami. It's a travesty to think that Miami is now a sewer, overrun by a phletora of Cubans. Ship them all back to Fidel.

These kids are just some "wanna be gangsters" hitting somebody for using the "N" word its ridiculous I am so sure that they even use that word with themselves and they are not even close to being blak, I just hope they get the punishment they are supposed to. I played soccer with 2 of the kids and they were good kids but suddenly they started hanging ot with the wrong people, and see what happen, i just think its dumb

Lets just they hope that they do time in the "ass-pounding" type of prison.

I'm sure they'll look pretty in a halter top and some daisy dukes.

actually this arrest is bull.... it was an average fight with no racism involved... 2 different "N" words... which people often get confused with... Nigga isnt a racism word... and this police report is all a lie... look at wat the worst suffered, a stiff neck n dizziness???? come on and be real.. nothing more than battery not attempted murder nor hate crime...

the only thing thats sad is how police make up more to the story to make it seem worse...

It's sad that so many commenters condemn the racist aspect of these boys' actions then the commenters turn around and denigrate Cubans. Can't we condemn actions without condemning any single racial group? I've seen and heard racist comments from hispanics, blacks, and non-hispanic whites. There's no single guilty party. I think in our community we have 2 extremes of kids: kids who are working their butts off with demanding school work and extracurricular activities, and others who have WAY TOO MUCH time on their hands and are just looking for trouble - and they scare the hell out of me.

Did you look at the photos of the two that are in the Herald online? they both look like thugs and bullies and the kind of gangsta skum that needs to be in prison.

Those guys were looking to victimize somebody, and the FIU kids were probably the least threatening and the easiest to attack.

I just moved to this area 2 months ago from NY. Though I shouldn't be but I'm really nervous. Why? I'm black. I thought I was really getting away from the crap. Since in NY hispanics and blacks are pretty much in the same boat they are at least nice to each other. Here, it depends where I go in the area I'm treated differently. I would like for this stupidity to stop but wishing doesn't make things so. I just have to always look over my shoulder. (which is sad)
Like the young man said "Welcome to Florida"

It's funny how all these people can write things talking about the suspects and not mention the victem. Listen the vitem must have said something to these kids! The behavior is not learned at home because no parent would teach such kind of behavior to their daughter or son. This is all influenced on who they hang around with and how the world makes it seem in movies etc thats these things are ok or cool just like using drugs. When you look at a story please look at the bright side and imagine your self on both sides.

WOW - This is amazing. Just the fact that these boys are Hispanics has brought out the biggots in LARGE numbers.

Of course, I am sure that this type of behavior against blacks has NEVER been conducted by non-Hispanics. Except maybe MILLIONS of times in the history of this country through to today. Biggots are not limited to Hispanics.

The issue here is not the ethnicity of the perpetrators - but the lack of morals that allow people to behave in this manner.

Let's stick to the issue, folks.

An event like this, and blogs such as this one, make me quiver. I am a college student and I have to look after myself continually. It doesn't help that hatred has become so common. Thankfully, I had a family and friends that cared. They showed me that everyone, even if they happen to look like me, is unique and differences may arise; however, having an understanding that these differences exist is key. It is apparent that these boys do not have this understanding, and therefore, did unspeakable things. Agree to disagree, but don’t resort to violence.

As far as this blog is concerned, people continue to attack one another as opposed to speaking about the issue at hand. There is constructive criticism, and there is blatant disrespect. Let's please pass on knowledge instead adding to the hatred that is destroying the world we all must live in.

Christina you are saying Cubans but my understanding that Miami is full of all types. I know one of the accussed and I belive him to be Brazilian. I do say that Miami is a fake place with fake people and very rude. I am glad I am leaving this place for good and I wont come back, not to spend my money, not to lay on the beach, I rather go to DR and save then spend in Miami. Miami is the rudest city I have ever lived in. I see men trying to impress what they have between their legs driving hummers when the closes mountain range is over 10 hours away. I see the fake tatoo, tough guy look but in reality they are all fake. Fake women with fake boobs who have no brain between the ears. I see fake men on roids who need it to help with the fact that they ahve been short on other areas. In the words of one of my favorite former Marines, it seems that the best part of Miami men and women roled down the crack of their mothers $%^ and ended up on the sheets as a stain. Enough said, Miami you are not worth it, and neither are your people...
