Amazing students, hope for the future

I had the great honor to be a presenter for last night's Silver Knights Awards. The kids who were honored -- every single one of them, including those who did not win the coveted trophy -- were truly amazing. Listening to what they had accomplished for their communities gave me hope for the future.
Made me feel like a slacker, too!

I tell you what, it really is great to read a positive story about young people.

I guess it's the nature of the news business, but it seems that the criminal stories and the bad news about young people always override the good news.

I know that there are many positive young people in our community that are providing valuable volunteer time to our less fortunate. These are not exciting stories.

There are quite a few who work hard and excel at their studies - also boring to the media.

So, it's a welcomed change to see the Miami Herald honor the best and brightest from each of our High Schools.

Congratulations to the winners and all of the nominees! Our future is in your hands.

God bless all of you.

My daughter was one of the Silver Knight nominees for Athletics , from Miami Senior HIgh. Although she did not win the Silver Knight, our family is very proud of her accomplishments. It was truly inspiring to see so many
special, caring kids trying to make this a better world for others.

This is no surprise to me. I interview applicants to my alma mater (Princeton University) and every single year I am shocked at how accomplished so many of our students are. There are so many incredibly accomplished students that I have yet to interview a student who has gotten accepted!

So many kids these days are absolutely phenomenal!
