What goes up...

...must come down. And that's true of the housing market.
Remember just a couple years back when we were all so land wealthy? Everybody was supposedly making a killing in real estate. New numbers now show that the market has slowed down. Or that at least it's taking longer to make a killing.
No surprise. Unfortunately, though, South Florida is still too expensive, even with a slowdown. For most middle class family, Miami is unaffordable.
I don't know how my college educated children will be able to buy a house here. They have to save $60,000 plus to afford a median-priced home, and that's not even in a neighborhood with good schools. A one-bedroom apartment -- the one my daughter and her husband live in -- now goes for $200,000.
Can you say North Carolina?

I would say "North Carolina" but I don't eat grits. Where would I get my "fritas" and "croquetas"????

Not to mention, un cafesito....

The housing prices are ridiculous - and our young people are having to make some tough decisions. Young professionals are finding it easier to start their careers elsewhere and hope that, down the road, they can afford to move back home.

Retirement is another issue -- it used to be that Miami Beach was the ultimate destination of retirees. Now, as we get older, we have to leave, because we cannot afford to live here on a fixed income. How weird.

South Florida's housing problems is just the icing on the cake. The problem here is that as prices inflate-- employers are not paying. People just get by if they have a fairly decent job with double income. The problem seems to be focused from having immigrants taking jobs at lower wages and not too many companies investing operations in South Florida due to the same cost problem factor. Hence, hurricanes, insurance companies, yada yada.

Moving as far north as even Jacksonville may not be such a bad idea. Moreso, the western side of the state looks even more attractive right now.

Don't you worry, "North Carolinian," hurricanes but mostly insurance companies have already decided that upon "yall.!"

A mass exodus of the poorest Floridians and other unwanted vermits awaits you in your post-slavery inexpensive haven-- suffer you will.
