Super Bowl publicity -- blemishes and all

Miami is gearing up for its big date with the Super Bowl and layering on the make up to impress her beau. But you can't hide the pimples, can you? A Time magazine story focuses on a shantytown in Liberty City and digs into our problems with low-income housing. Ouch!
But we deserve it. Miami -- and much of South Florida -- has become unaffordable for many. Yes, I worry about the working poor who can't find a place to live, but I also worry about my children's generation, those who are college educated and have decent jobs but don't earn enough to get together a down payment for a home.
Can you say brain drain?

Maybe next time you should think about what someone says before immediately blocking them out in a wave of criticism. Perhaps Tancredo was right: Miami is nothing but a cesspool of poverty quite sadly portraying much of what a 3rd world resembles. It's unfortunate that Miami needs to look to other major cities for guidance. Denver would be a good start.

Ana, this is a great post. If you look at social and housing programs up north you will find that they are close to excellent.

I have really nothing to say about Miami's low income housing projects since Miami Herald's series of 'House of Lies' has covered the sad topic very well. Hopefully things will change for the better, quickly.

What is unfortunate is how, at every opportunity, some people are quick to refer to Miami as a 3rd world country. They probably don't even know what 3rd world means - or for that matter that there is a 2nd world and 1st world also. They are using the term just because they have heard it used before.

Please, don't get me wrong - I agree with your post and I think that something has to be done to make living in Miami more affordable. But, where I take offense is with people, like your first post - that immediately jumps back on the biggoted bandwagon.

I had a "friend" make a remark about how currupt Hialeah politics are because of the Cubans -- so I reminded her that Milander was not exactly an altar boy either.

Look at Chicago, few Cubans there, and the history of political corruption is legendary.

Yes, the economic situation needs to be improved. Between the speculators bringing up the prices for homes, and the insurance companies bleeding us or dropping us, we have the "perfect storm" for a bad economic situation.

I remember, when I was a kid, northeners would come to Miami to retire, NOW, we are looking to move up north for our retirement. IRONIC!

Everyone who says that Miami is the 3rd world has obviously never been to a third world country...There is quite a difference.
