Rosie -- the answer to literary ho-hums?

You can say lots of things about Rosie O, but no one can ever proclaim she is boring. Having her open the Miami Book Fair is an interesting choice and one that will probably be controversial, not only because of her language and her views but also because the book fair usually has very literary figures during the weeknights leading to the street fair. Certainly Rosie is entertaining but not high brow.
But here's an idea for you: Rosie (and her book) may be the perfect person to spice up interest in an endeavor -- book-reading -- that is increasingly falling by the wayside. Too many people think of book-reading as unnecessary, slow, boring and something "others" do. Very sad.
Books can be about anything. They're not limited to the tomes we were assigned in high school. Maybe that's an idea that will ride the coattails of Rosie's appearance.

I am very dissapointed that they chose this woman to open a book fair. Really.

It is a sign of our society these days that all a person needs to do to become a "celebrity" is be known. They do not need to achieve anything worthwhile, or contribute to society in any positive way.

All they have to do is be written about in the tabloids.

I am not at all impressed with Ms. Odonell. She seems to be a bitter and angry woman who is desparate for attention. She is not bright or funny.

I don't know about her writing talents - I made the mistake of reading her first book. What idiocy - an obsessed fan actually convinced this woman that she was a mutipersonality disorder sufferer. And she wrote a VERY BORING book about this!!

I am not reading the new book. If it's anything like the first, I am better off not reading.

As far as her "inspiring" people to read -- I don't think so. This is no HARRY POTTER. This is just another chance to get people to pay attention to her.

I am not interested.

By the way, I have read your books and enjoyed them tremendously. "Birthday Parties in Heaven" is one of my favorite books to give as a gift.

The Miami Book Fair has lost its way. Instead of celebrating the wisdom and and fantastic speaking skills of the many great writers available today, the Book Fair follows the obnoxious lead of mainstream media in fawning over the brainless, pointless, media personality of the moment.
I personnally think that our "society" is NOT obsessed with "celebrities", only our teenagers are....however, clearly the Miami Book Fair is now run by some idiot marketing person who can't make a distinction about the demographic of a book fair versus the demographic of YouTube.
The Miami Book Fair has now officially finished circling the rim, and has gone down the drain.
The choice of someone as stupid, profane, and pointless as Rosie O'Donnell needs to be examined by the people who actually care about the survival of the Miami Book Fair.
