Are our kids safe in school?

State universities are asking the legislature for money to beef up security, a good idea in this age of fear and random killings. But I wonder how much we can really protect students in wide-open campuses like University of Florida or Florida International University. There are so many entrances and exits, so many buildings, so many "visitors" and "students" and no sure way of identifying everyone on campus that I feel we have to accept a sad verity: the inherent danger of life anywhere.

You are right.

We live with the ILLUSION of safety. What happened at Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech University can happen any where at any time. When someone with a gripe will feel like taking their grudge out on innocents.

We can build a million walls and lock every door - but, when someone has made the decision to kill themselves AND others, it is very difficult to stop them. There is no threat that will work.

We need to make ourselves more aware of our surroundings and more in tune with the people around us. Maybe, the disturbed individuals can be identified and given medical help before they "go off" on others.
