First day of football practice
My 15-year-old son starts "official" football practice today, which means he's at school from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. hitting dummies, running drills and bonding with his buddies. Last night I packed a 5-lb lunch for him -- two sandwiches, two apple sauces, dozens of grapes, chips and assorted cookies. He's been excited about this all weekend.
I just wish we -- parents, kids, schools -- had this kind of intense and focused commitment to school. Can you imagine requiring kids to hit the books, instead of the dummies, for 10 hours a day?

I believe that it's great that your son is involved in a sport. It seems that kids that participate in activities (sports, newspaper, yearbook, debate, band...etc) have a much better (overall) high school experience than those that just show up and then go home.
Also, in sports, you have the coaches keeping an eye on grades and (many times) providing a tutor if needed. They want their players to be acadmically eligible to play. Other activities also have interested adults that support the academic goals of our children.
Also, your child is getting fresh air, lots of healthy exercise and an experience in teamwork.
I have worked with many people who could have benefitted from knowing how to work in a team environment - believe me - it's a valuable skill.
I say congratulations to you and your son - and good luck this season.
Oh, how I remember my high school summer football practice. It was hell. But if it were not for that, I wonder if I could have survived the hell of VN.
