Will a strike backfire?

The town is abuzz with the potential closings or slowdowns caused by immigrants who are striking for the day. But plenty of us who technically qualify as immigrants or children thereof are wondering it this is a tactic that will win over any converts to the cause -- that we are vital to the economy of the nation.
Last night at dinner with friends there was a lively discussion about this. All of us immigrants -- and children of immigrants -- decided that one more rally, however just the cause, was pushing the issue too much, especially on the heels of the controvery over the national anthem in Spanish.

The national anthem should be sung in English. My parents, who are Cuban, feel the American National Anthem should be sung in English. I was born here so I definitely feel the anthem should be sung in English. With all those artists they got to collaborate on this thing, they should have just written a totally different song that highlights what they are trying to accomplish. I don't think "Our Anthem" will endear them to anyone.

This strike shows the United States Dept of Homeland Security speaks from both sides of its mouth. With 850,000 illegals in Florida, the issue of controlling our borders is a huge challenge.

Businesses and families are the egregious violators - these "undocumented" workers sure don't have any problem finding work, be it in our homes or on a construction site.

My bet is the problem would be much smaller if the employer went to jail.

I think that it's intellectually dishonest when journalists and opinion columnists lump in Americans' feelings about illegal immigrants with their feelings about immigrants in general. No country in the world is more accepting of foreign immigrants, but Americans increasingly have the feeling that the process is out of control, and that order needs to be restored (to the extent that we ever had it).

Many Americans are also more than a little anxious about the apparent fact that many illegal arrivals are either ambivalent or downright hostile to assimilation. We increasingly feel that we're the ones being assimilated, as opposed to vice-versa.

It is also beyond much dispute that the government of Mexico has been encouraging illegal border crossings for years as a means of exporting its surplus labor. This takes the pressure off of the Mexican government to institute real reforms that would promote economic growth in that country.

I think immigrants wherever they are deserve recognition and being accorded the resident status. I commend you for being bold in the US to demand your rights. The so-called backlash is being used to scare immigrants from championing their rights. The world is watching closely on what will happen in the US. Please will you and your readers also visit my blog and leave comments on http:/a-migrants-memoirs.blogspot.com

Well done. Keep it up.

People who are here illegally have no "right" to be here. They are here merely at our sufferance.

I believe that this focus by the border patrol on illegal immigrants is a ploy to get the public to believe that they are actually working towards better security. The truth is that they have done NOTHING to prevent another 9/11.

By running around, collecting undocumented workers, the government tries to give the impression of being on top of things. They are not.

The strike will not backfire - those who already have feelings of resentment towards new immigrants will only use it as an excuse to voice their hatred. Those that understand how this country has developed from the beginning of it's history, will understand.

This is a nation of immigrants.

These undocumented workers are performing jobs in our communities. Our construction companies and agricultural community depends on them and so do all the mid-to upper income homes that benefit from the cheap labor.

Where else can you get someone to clean your entire house once a week for $50?
