The other stats football players should have
Florida has long been known for its football talent, but this year the high schools seem to have produced a bumper crop. Three South Florida schools are headed for state championships and our stories are awash with statistics -- vertical jump, 40-times etc.
I wonder if anyone at these schools is paying the same amount of attention to other stats -- GPA and SAT scores.

A great many of them do you have excellent stats. As an Aquinas alum, I know that many STA students are among the finest scholars at our school. At Northwestern, the football team has led the charge in turning around the entire school itself. The football players have set not only a positive athletic model but positive academic and behavioral ones as well. My knowledge of Booker T. Washington is almost nonexistent, but I'm sure their coach does not accept poor academic performance.
As you know, a student has to maintain a passing GPA to be allowed to participate in sports or any other activity in school. This gives the parents the help of coaches (who often provide free tutors) to motivate their children to work on their studies.
Besides that issue, I think we are talking about apples and oranges - athletics and academics are not self-exclusive. It has been demonstrated that the students that are more involved in activities during their school years are more likely to be successful.
I think that you are perpetuating a stereotype of the dumb jock - which is not always true.
Some kids have athletic talent that can lead to a college education which they may not have been able to achieve otherwise.
So, this time I disagree with your point.
