Why are young, educated minorities leaving?

Census figures show that young, educated minorities are fleeing Miami-Dade. I don't have to conduct a study to know why. My younger friends have repeatedly complained about two things: few opportunities and a dismal social life. Miami-Dade is not a hospitable place for these people, especially if you're young, professional and black.

It's hard to find a good paying job (salary plus benefits)

There's no real industry in Miami other than tourism. Aside from that, pretty much any job that you qualify for or are trained in school for, you can pretty much do it anywhere. When you add that to the traffic, crime, heat, cost of living relative to potential income, it really makes no sense to stay down there.

Well, I left because as an educator, the salary couldn't keep up with a middle class cost of living. I moved to Metro Atlanta where I teach in a neighborhood with excellent schools and I could afford to purchase and maintain a home in the neighborhood where I teach. I couldn't do that in Miami.

A dismal social life?? Are you kidding Ana? That's last on the list of reasons why Miami-Dade county sucks.

1) 7% sales tax. Glad to see that extra penny on every sale is really paying off on the infrastructure

2) Urban living. Except for some scant neighborhoods and some places way far down south and west, the large majority of the county is urban, unlike Broward which is much more rural.

3) Crime. Need I say more?

4) Traffic. I-95, 826, they all suck.

5) Corrupt and inept politicians and government agencies. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go read the "House of Lies" or about Dennis Stackhouse.

6) Housing Costs. The most unaffordable housing market in country (comparing prices to incomes). I don't understand how any of Ana's friends would rank "a dismal social life" as more important than their terribly overprices housing.

7) Lack of English proficiency. It's Spanish most places you go and the people working at a lot of places don't understand you when you speak in English.

8) A dismal social life

Around 2001 miami dade's hispanic population was 65% latino (cubans). Cubans dont particularly like blacks to begin with and it just creates friction. Friction that leads to a feeling that you dont belong here. No nightlife other than the club scene, lack of acceptance of blacks and low salaries are just too much to overcome. I can remember back in 1999 Hip Hop wasnt even played in clubs because it would attract a 'bad crowd'. In NYC you hear Hip Hop at almost every bar and even at some of the best restaurants in town just to give an example. If you are a black professional or someone who just graduated my advice is to get the hell out ASAP. I left 6 yrs ago and I went from waiting tables after graduating college to being consired to be a VP for a dot.com. This would of never happened if I didnt leave florida and moved up north where people dont see u as a black man but as a man. I never hear the N word like I would in Miami.

Does your Blog Title Question include White Anglos as we are now the a minority in Dade County soon Broward County as well.
(Truth Matters) said it all...
and add to the fact
As a White Anglo it has become very difficult to survive here, most local companies do not wish to employ you unless you are bi-lingual. add to the fact that the cost of living has become obscene.

What is the point of paying every dime you earn just to give all for property taxes, housing insurance, tolls, corrupt Government Agencies,
& Big Oil,
and you think anything is left over for socializing...
You got to be kidding me..

Last time I went to a night club for a night out with my wife
it ended up costing me
over $400.00 between Valet, cover charge, a table to sit down which could only be done if we ordered bottle service.
If you want to socialize you better be a socialite!, Celebrity or Pro-Athlete.
It ain't for the regular folks no more....
