Rent a dog?

Here's a novel idea for those people who don't have enough time to own a dog full-time. Like job sharing, you can be a "master" at your convenience.
While it's a laudable idea in some respects -- namely it helps the animals who aren't adopted outright -- it really makes me wonder about the motives of a part-time owner. The fun thing about having a pet, particularly a dog, is the bond you create with the animal over time. The dog becomes part of the family.
Can that really be done part-time? Makes me think of these dogs as an accessory item.

At first, my reaction was, "WHAT?, Next thing you'll know we will be renting husbands, and babies..."

But then, it occurred to me that many pet lovers who cannot accomodate a dog in their lives (but would love to have the experience) would really enjoy it.

Basically, you hear about therapy dogs that visit nursing homes and hospitals to cheer those folk up -- this is similar in function. Perhaps, it is a way of enjoying canine company until they find themselves in a position where they can adopt a dog.

Also, it might be a good way for people to gauge if owning a dog would be a good idea. Without the commitment.

Might be a good thing, I think.
