Protecting the homeless

Surely attacks on the homeless are among the heinous crimes that turn my stomach when I read about them in the paper. What makes them even more reprehensible -- and scary -- is the fact that they are overwhelmingly committed by teenagers. Teenagers!! Now some legislators want to include them as part of a hate crime category.
I think that's an excellent idea.

Ms. Veciana-Suarez, you are very wrong on this issue. One group should not be protected more than another regardless of race, social status, or sexual preference. If we really want to protect people, Congress must pass legislation that will toughen the penalty for violence against EVERYONE. A violent attack is no less of a crime if done to a straight rich white Christian than to a gay homeless black Jew. Both acts deserve equal punishment under the law. Believe me, there are people who hate straight rich white Christians, too. And remember that criminals will ALWAYS prey on the weak and marginalized.
When will our Congress men and women finally understand that ALL life is precious and really dig into root causes? Hate crime legislation is like a band-aid to make certain people feel better and more protected without truly addressing the issues at hand.
Protect the homeless by addressing the social issues that put people on the street such as mental health, education, and job placement assistance not by adding another label to "hate crimes"

PROTECTING THE HOMELESS AGAINST ASSAULT — The Conference supported SB 539, which would make it a hate crime to assault a person because he or she is homeless. Sponsored by Sen. Alex X. Mooney (District 3, Frederick County), the bill was narrowly defeated in the Senate
