Salary comparison is faulty

A UM business prof says that Miami-Dade's public school spending on top administrators' salaries is in line with private businesses. He made these remarks after a list of adminsitrators making more than $100,000 was released. It turns out that the number of people who went over that figure has almost doubled in one year. Some of them also get company cars. The UM expert says they would be getting that kind of payout if they were in the private sector.
I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand, I am sure that many of these people more than earn that pay. For instance, the principal at my children's high school must put in some long, long hours. Not only is she at school during regular hours, but I also see her at every function I attend -- games, PTAs, etc.
On the other hand, these administrators do NOT work for a private business. If they did, they would not get the kind of retirement benefits they now get. They also would not get the number of holidays. Forget the pension and retiree medical coverage. They'd be lucky to have a 401K.
One more thing: I'd like to know how their salaries relate to the salary of an average teacher. Is there as much of a discrepancy in the school system between the top dogs and the peons as there is in the private sector?

Many gifted educators leave the classrooms and opt for administrative jobs because of the difference in pay....more than $30,000/year.

That's nothing to sneeze at!!

How do you fix a system that is badly broken all the way to its core? Is anyone in Miami-Dade really willing to listen? I have been a teacher for ten years. My current salary is $39,750. I have to work an extra period (giving up my planning time for lessons, parent calls, grading papers) to make over 40k. Yes, this is for 212 days, ( 10 months ), but I must take out $300.00 per pay period to be able to pay my bills during the summer months. I currently owe $32,ooo. in student loans from an original loan of $34k. The government-sponsored loan program takes $126.00 out of my $287.00 payment each month for interest. I have paid down my loan by $2000.00 in seven (7) years!. The federal government, in an effort to attract more people into the teaching field, offered to pay back $5000.00 in student loans, but only for those who had taken out loans after 1998. I, and many others at my school, do not qualify. Another slap in the face. I am now painfully aware that the contracted salary agreement that would give me a raise this summer, is in danger of being revoked. If our union gets the Board to pay for our insurance, they will probably not honor the raise. If I get the raise, I will then have to pay for insurance. Yes, lots of folks in Miami-Dade make less than $40k/year. Do many of them hold 4-year degrees? Our state legislators and county officials do not respect educators. They may say they do, to earn your votes, but they really don't care about education. Do you think that the elected School Board does? Tune in on Wednesdays on WLRN and watch the circus. I call out to the taxpayers, the parents and concerned citizens of Miami-Dade to get involved in our education crisis. Do you know anyone who wants to be a teacher in Miami-Dade?

The school site people on the $100k base salary list are NOT teachers, there are 154 principals on the list (out of 407 total on the list). They should be. There are ZERO teachers on this list. But experienced teachers should be the majority of the list.

There are 374 or so schools in MDCPS, each with 3-5 principals, so you do the math. It amounts to only 10% of all school site administrators actually in contact with kids that are on this list.

Zero teachers.

The reality is, the majority of people on the list could move away or not show up for work and we at the school site would NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

It is a country club game of steal the tax payers money while they can.

And the public lets them for layers of confusing bureaucracy. These "big dogs" have billions of dollars of capital, a staff of lawyers and a million dollar PR department that allows them to spin numbers until your and my head spins.

but this did not fool the florida auditor general who enforced an oversight board in 2003 over the capital side of the MDCPS budget ($3 billion) - and this year the auditor general found that $2.6 BILLION of this money had once AGAIN been mismanaged.

Our school board complains of cuts, but they do not tell you that the cuts are merely annual increases from the state that are not as great as were predicted earlier. There are no cuts yet.

In fact, if you calculate the $/student annually for the last 10 years, this number has increased faster than inflation, yet our school board proves year after year that it cannot track or account for the money, they are doing "LESS with MORE."

Rudy Crew turned 9 F schools into 28 during the same period that Broward's Frank Till totally eliminated F schools, proving that Crew's remote control of schools and curriculum is a failure.

Please email me at beights@yahoo.com to join a grass roots movement to take back our schools and put them back into the hands of parents, teachers and schoolsite administrators.

Ana, I know of two to three who are on that list and are close to retirement. These professionals work the regular school jobs and adult education job during the entire school year. I know of one in particular who arrives at school at 6:45 am and does not leave until 11:00 PM. This person has worked like this over 20 years, which has made it possible for his children to finish post graduate degrees without a student loan. To tell you the truth, I worked like this three years and collapse during the 4th year. I will never do this again. I wish the District would not publish these names without acknowledging those who work over 40 hours a week.

While you are lauding the principal you see at every school function along with the regular hours he/she may work ... there are other school employees at those same functions (otherwise they would not exist). What we do is called VOLUNTEERING because there is no compensation for afterschool functions. We do it for the kids ... we do it to keep our jobs ... we just do it because someone needs to.
A child is not educated by administrators and teachers alone ... there are many dedicated peons who are filling in the gaps.
