Fireworks of another kind

My Fourth of July celebration was fairly typical: family, fireworks and barbecued hamburgers and hotdogs. All five of my children were here, and we celebrated my daughter's and brother-in-law's birthdays. A couple of things were very different, though, and they're probably a sign of the times.
When not eating, everyone was gathered around the TV watching the Italy-GermanyWorld Cup match. It was an incredible game, but I couldn't help wondering: What about America's pastime? What about baseball?
Second thing: If we needed any reminder about the lurking dangers of this brave new world, we need to look no further than North Korea's missile tests -- on U.S. Independence Day.

Not to mention the 1st Shuttle Launch carried on the 4th of July.... What an awesome display during the biggest celebration of the Independence of the USA.

It sounds to me like you had a wonderful 4th of July! Your kids around you - your husband - and extended family. You celebrated birthdays and ate yummy food. How can you go wrong with that combination??? Wish I could have been there too....

Baseball is not what it used to be -- ask Canseco. The league and players have only themselves to blame for taking the most beloved game and lowering it's status in our hearts. Between the strikes and the drug abuse allegations - these players have not endeared themselves to the general public.

Many don't stay in one town long enough to develop a fan base. They come and they go.

Yes, we live in dangerous times. Korea is not the only concern. But, I think that, because we have so many threats, we must enjoy every happy event and celebrate the freedom that makes this country GREAT. The 4th of July - the anniversary of the great experiment - we have all been blessed to live here.

God bless America!
